It was our first city to visit in India. From Kathmandu we took a 14 hour-bus to Siliguri and from Siliguri he took a 5 hour jeep which took us to Darjeeling. It’s a town that is situated 2140 m beyond the sea level. We knew that we gonna be there during the moonsoon season so probably we won’t see a lot…you have to know that Darjeeling is mostly famous for its magnific views. You are able to see one of the highest peaks in the world like Kangchenjunga which is the third highest mountain in the world. But unfortunately we didn’t see it because of the weather. However, we were amazed by the atmosphere of Darjeeling. We didn’t feel so much India, there was still a lot of Nepali and Tibetian atmosphere as a lot of these people live in Darjeeling. You could see all beautiful women dressed in their traditional costumes, you could feel in the air that this city stayed in the old times long time ago…in Darjeeling I felt like I’m still in the old times of British colony. There was something magical in this city that moved us back to these old times.
Darjeeling to pierwsze miasto w Indiach, do którego dotarłam wraz z Natalią. Żeby tam dotrzeć wzięłyśmy 14 godzinny autobus ze stolicy Nepalu- Katmandu. Jak na Nepal autobus był mega komfortowy, ja całą noc przespałam mimo że była okropna burza :p Z granicy nepalsko- hinduskiej jechałyśmy jeep-em już do Darjeelling. Jest to miasto, a raczej miasteczko, położone wysoko w górach ( 2140 m n.p.m). Droga do niego była niesamowita, podczas jazdy czułam jak się przenoszę do czasów kolonizacji…Całe Darjeeling ma bardzo dużo pozostałości brytyjskich, styl w jakim są urządzone szkoły, budynki oddaje mega ten klimat. Trzeba przyznać, że będąc już w Indiach, tak na prawdę, nie czułam się jak bym była w tym kraju. Po uliczkach Darjeeling chodziło bardzo dużo Tybetańczyków ubranych w swoje tradycyjne stroje, do tego było też dużo Nepalczyków, którzy tam przyjechali w poszukiwaniu pracy. Co więcej, bardzo dużo studentów z Nepalu właśnie idzie na studia na hinduskie uniwersytety do takich miast jak Darjeeling, New Delhi czy Bangalore.
While being in Darjeeling, one of the most relevant things that I visited was the refugee camp of Tibetians. It was set up in the 1959 when His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama escaped from Lhasa ( Tibet) to India (because of the conflict/war between Tibet and China). Then, around 85ooo Tibetians followed him as they wanted to live as human beings. So finally some of these people established a camp which was fundraised mostly through subscriptions, donations or charity shows. What’s more, these Tibetans, that escaped, are working everyday in the camp because they need to have more income to sustain the camp. Today this centre is home for 650 refugees. The centre provides free food, housing and medical care but, as I mentioned above, the refugees have to work and help the centre. From the photos below you can see how they earn the money to help the camp survive.
Będąc w Darjeeling, jedną z najbardziej emocjonalnych ‘rzeczy’ jakie odkrywałam było centrum/ oboz dla uchodzców oraz sierot z Tybetu. Wróćmy do historii… w 1959 roku XIV Dalailama uciekł z Lhasy ( stolicy Tybetu) do Indii z powodu konfliktu Tybetu z Chinami. Po tym wydarzeniu około 85000 Tybetańczyków uciekło za nim, ponieważ chcieli żyć jak normalni ludzie, w pokoju, bez przemocy i ciągłego strachu ze strony chińskiej. Ci Tybetańczycy którzy uciekli założyli centrum w Darjeeling, w którym uchodzcy z Tybetu mają za darmo jedzenie, spanie oraz opiekę medyczną. W zamian za to cały czas tam pracują robiąc rózne artystyczne pamiątki dla turystów, w ten sposób również zarabiają na utrzymanie tego obozu.
